Tried to activate Windows and it couldn't connect, also a couple other installs tried to connect without success. As you can tell I have very little knowledge with this part of laptop setup. Now I don't see anythng in the system tray. Check your 'Network Connections' you should have a 'Local Area Connection' icon, double-click it, get the properties on the TCP/IP settings and make sure its all set to DHCP (dynamically assigned).

You may also... If you are getting an IP of the type 169.254.x.x, there is a good chance that you have a corrupt Winsock. It reads the IP address correctly, and even attempts to go online, but can't. my review here Highlight it, enter, then look for the 'On board LAN'.
